A month or so ago, my basement flooded. The culprit, tree roots in the sewer. Although most of the water was in my laundry area, there was water on the finished side of the basement too. Lucky, I had the cell phone number of Ashlee at ECI Services, Property Restoration Experts. She was able to get a plumber, "Plumber Pat" out to my house on a Sunday who unclogged the drain and the water was gone, but not the mess. Next came Kevin, with his mitigation equipment. He moved all the furniture around and ripped out the damaged carpet. He did this all on his own, which is pretty remarkable because he is not a big guy. He assessed the damage and made sure everything was disinfected and he arranged the equipment to maximize their drying capabilities. It was very important to dry walls, floor etc as soon as possible to prevent more damage. The mitigation equipment ran day and night for a couple days. ECI employees stopped by our house several times during that period and checked on the drying out progress and rearranged the equipment as needed.
Finally, our basement was dry. Next, ECI Services sent the people who decided what needed to be repaired and/or replaced. We needed new flooring and trim on the finished side of the basement, On the unfinished side, the floor would need to be re-painted. The total cost of water mitigation and repair/replacement was about $5800.
I picked out our new carpet and waited about a week for delivery. ECI Services, made arrangements with us to come back out and install carpeting, wood trim and paint. This took about a day and a half and included moving furniture, shelving (and everything stored on shelves) and washer and dryer. Needless to say, we were pleased with the results.
I paid our deductible and Frankenmuth Insurance paid the rest.
Lesson learned - Check your coverage before you have a loss. I never thought I would have a large water loss which would damage the finished side of my basement. A $5000 loss really is not that big. Luckily, I did not have any damage to my furniture (only the legs of the sofa were in standing water and they are being replaced. Now is the time to see if you have coverage, if so how much?
